In order to address specific hydrological problems of the North Eastern Region and to have close and effective interaction with agencies and institutions working in the region, NIH-NERC is functioning from Guwahati, Assam. The North Eastern Regional Centre (NERC), Guwahati having jurisdiction over the seven North-Eastern states, namely, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura and also Sikkim and parts of West Bengal (Teesta basin) was established in August 1988. To focus more on flood management of the region, the Centre was functioning as Centre for Flood Management Studies - Brahmaputra Basin, for over two decades between September 2001 to March 2022. The NIH-NERC is one of the first research organization to take up focused studies and research in hydrology and water resources in the region and closely interacting with other central and state departments; academic and research institutes; NGOs in the region. As one of the oldest RC of NIH Roorkee, NERC played significant role in important national level programmes like Hydrology Project I and II, NHP, JSA, JSA-CTR etc., under the directions of DoWR,RD& GR, MoJS, Govt. of India along with other agencies. As per the action plan, thrust areas for research and studies of the Ventre are (i) Flood estimation and routing; (ii) Structural/non-structural measures for flood management; (iii) Integrated watershed management for flood control; (iv) Hydrological data base management system; (v) Drainage congestion and erosion problems; (vi) Water quality problems; (vii) Socio-economic aspect of flood disaster; (viii) Springshed management; and (ix) Technology transfer through trainings and awareness programs etc..
